What Is AWG and Why Should You Care?

AWG (American Wire Gauge) is a standardized system for measuring wire thickness. Lower AWG numbers mean thicker wires. A 22AWG cable has thicker power wires than a 28AWG cable. This thickness directly affects how much current the cable can carry — and therefore how fast your devices charge.

At USBToUSB, we pay attention to AWG ratings in our cables. Here’s why wire thickness matters and how to choose cables that deliver full charging speed.

AWG and Current Capacity

Thicker wires have lower electrical resistance, which means they can carry more current without overheating. The USB specification requires specific AWG ratings for different current levels:

Using a cable with thinner wires than required results in voltage drop — the charger outputs 5V but the device receives only 4.2V due to resistance in the thin wires. This causes slow charging, intermittent charging, or no charging at all.

Voltage Drop: The Hidden Charging Killer

Every cable has electrical resistance that causes voltage drop. The formula: Voltage Drop = Current × Resistance. Thinner wires have higher resistance, causing greater voltage drop.

Example with a 1m cable:

  • 22AWG (0.053 Ω/m): At 3A, voltage drop = 0.32V. Device receives 4.68V (from 5V) — acceptable
  • 28AWG (0.213 Ω/m): At 3A, voltage drop = 1.28V. Device receives 3.72V — below USB minimum, charging fails

This is why cheap cables with thin wires don’t fast-charge — the voltage drops below the device’s minimum threshold before the power even reaches the phone.

USB-C Cable Requirements

USB-C cables have specific AWG requirements based on their current rating:

3A Cables (60W Maximum)

  • Power wires: 22AWG minimum
  • Maximum length: 1m (passive) or 2m (active)
  • Standard USB-C cable rating
  • Sufficient for phones, tablets, and MacBook Pro 13″

5A Cables with E-Marker (100W Maximum)

  • Power wires: 20AWG minimum
  • E-Marker chip required (identifies cable as 5A capable)
  • Maximum length: 1m (passive) or 2m (active)
  • Required for MacBook Pro 16″ and other 100W devices

Without an E-Marker chip, a USB-C cable is limited to 3A (60W) even if the wires are thick enough for 5A. The charger won’t send 5A through a cable that can’t identify itself as 5A-capable.

Data Wire AWG vs Power Wire AWG

USB cables have separate wires for data and power. Manufacturers often use different AWG for each:

  • Power wires (VBUS and GND): Thicker (lower AWG) — typically 22-24AWG
  • Data wires (D+ and D-): Thinner (higher AWG) — typically 28-32AWG

This is normal and correct. Data signals use very little current, so thin data wires are fine. Power wires must thick to minimize voltage drop.

In USB-C cables, the high-speed data pairs (SSTX and SSRX) use even thinner wires (typically 32-34AWG twisted pair) because they carry differential signals at very low current. The CC (Configuration Channel) wire is also thin — it carries only configuration signals.

Cable Length and AWG Interaction

Longer cables need thicker wires to maintain the same voltage drop. A 0.5m cable with 24AWG wires has less resistance than a 2m cable with the same wires.

For USB 2.0 (maximum 5m length):

  • Up to 1m: 28AWG power wires are acceptable
  • 1-2m: 26AWG recommended
  • 2-3m: 24AWG recommended
  • 3-5m: 22AWG required

How to Identify Cable AWG

Quality cables print the AWG rating on the cable jacket. Look for text like:

  • “22AWG x 2C + 28AWG x 2C” — means 2 power wires at 22AWG + 2 data wires at 28AWG
  • “20AWG x 2P + 32AWG x 2P + 32AWG x 4P” — USB-C 5A cable with 20AWG power pairs

If the AWG isn’t printed on the cable, it’s likely a low-quality cable with thin wires. Quality manufacturers always print specifications on the cable jacket.

Signs Your Cable Has Too-Thin Wires

  • Slow charging: Phone charges at 5W or less despite using a fast charger
  • “Charging” but not increasing: Battery percentage doesn’t increase while plugged in
  • Cable gets warm: Thin wires heat up under current load
  • Charging works with short cable but not long cable: Longer cable with same thin wires has more resistance
  • Fast charging only works with original cable: Manufacturer’s cable has correct AWG; replacement cable doesn’t
