What Is a Right Angle USB Adapter?
A right angle (or L-shaped) USB adapter changes the direction of the USB connector by 90 degrees. Instead of the cable pointing straight out from the port, it runs along the side of the device. Available in left-angle and right-angle variants, these adapters fit different device orientations.

When You Need a Right Angle Adapter
Wall-Mounted TVs
The most common use case. When a TV is mounted flush against the wall, there’s often only 2-3cm of clearance behind it. A standard USB cable sticks out 3-4cm, making it impossible to mount the TV flush. A right angle adapter redirects the cable upward or downward, fitting within the available clearance.
Tight USB Port Spacing

Some laptops and USB hubs have ports spaced so closely that thick USB cables can’t sit side by side. A right angle adapter moves the cable parallel to the device, freeing up adjacent ports for other cables.
In-Car USB Ports
Car USB ports are often located in tight spaces — inside armrests, glove boxes, or center consoles. A right angle adapter prevents the cable from sticking out and being hit by objects stored nearby.

Left Angle vs Right Angle: Which Do You Need?
The direction of the angle matters based on your port orientation:
- Left angle: Cable exits to the left of the port (when looking at the port face-on)
- Right angle: Cable exits to the right of the port
- Up angle: Cable exits upward
- Down angle: Cable exits downward
Our USB 3.0 AM to AF adapter is a left angle variant. If your cable needs to exit to the right, you’d need a right angle version instead. Consider the physical layout of your device before ordering.
USB 3.0 Speed: No Compromise
Unlike cheap USB 2.0 adapters, our right angle adapter maintains full USB 3.0 speeds. The adapter has 9 pins on each side (4 USB 2.0 + 5 SuperSpeed), ensuring no speed loss for external SSDs, flash drives, and other USB 3.0 devices.
In testing, we measured identical 5 Gbps transfer speeds through the adapter compared to a direct connection. The right angle bend doesn’t affect signal integrity because the adapter uses a rigid internal PCB rather than a bent cable.

Some USB cables come with built-in right angle connectors. These are convenient because they eliminate the need for a separate adapter. However, right angle adapters offer more flexibility:

Common Issues and Solutions
Adapter Blocks Adjacent Port
Some right angle adapters are bulky and block the adjacent USB port. Our USB 3.0 adapter is designed with a slim profile to minimize this issue. However, on ports with very tight spacing (under 8mm between ports), even slim adapters may cause interference.
Adapter Fits Loosely
Quality adapters have a snug fit with positive retention. If your adapter wiggles, it may be a low-quality unit with poor tolerance. Loose adapters can cause intermittent connections and data corruption.
USB 2.0 Devices Work Too
The adapter is USB 3.0 but is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices. You can use it with USB 2.0 flash drives, keyboards, and other peripherals without issues.
