USB-IF Announces New Certification Requirements for 240W EPR Cables
Published: July 2026 | Source: USB Implementers Forum Technical Bulletin
The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced updated certification requirements for USB Power Delivery 3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) cables, effective Q3 2026. The changes address safety concerns following independent lab reports of cable insulation failures at 48V sustained loads.
New Requirements Summary
| Parameter | Old Spec | New Spec (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Insulation Withstand | 60V DC | 80V DC (1 minute) |
| Temperature Rating | 60°C ambient | 75°C ambient, 105°C conductor |
| E-Marker Validation | SOP’ read only | SOP’ + CRC validation + challenge-response |
| Conductor Resistance | <167mΩ (5A) | <120mΩ (5A, EPR only) |
| Flex Test Cycles | 10,000 | 15,000 (with 48V load applied) |
Impact on Manufacturers
Major cable manufacturers (Anker, Belkin, UGREEN) have confirmed compliance with the new standards. However, budget and generic cable brands may face significant redesign costs. The stricter E-Marker validation will effectively eliminate passive (non-E-Marker) cables from the 240W market.
New Logo Requirements
USB-IF will introduce a new “240W EPR Certified” logo distinct from the existing 100W mark. Cables must display:
- USB-IF certification ID (traceable online)
- Wattage rating (240W) and voltage (48V)
- QR code linking to certification database
Effective date: September 1, 2026. Grandfathering period ends December 31, 2026.
